I Can (a short by Ben Seim)

I Can

I had a recent realization that I'm still pondering.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

The application of this verse goes far beyond the natural into the supernatural (mind & spirit).

Fasting, holding our breath, resisting escapes to avoid (death scroll, alcohol, emotional eating). These are all natural and our capabilities in the natural realms are dictated by our mind (brain, thought patterns, limiting beliefs, etc.). White knuckling it may work for a bit but it's not sustainable. You don't become a Jedi overnight.

We can and should do better at things in the natural realm (our body/mind is a temple) but more importantly, let's level up to our true identity and have God's eternal perspective as we make decision big and small. Two benefits: 1) Not white knuckling in the natural realm (greater sustained capabilities). 2) Significant impact/power in the spiritual realm (eternity).

Having the power/ability and wielding it based on scripture (turning the other cheek) is power (humility) that often is not recognized by others on Earth but it benefits us personally on Earth as we fulfill our mission (no soldier ties himself up in civilian matters).

Why now? It's a new year and some of us are setting goals, establishing new habits/systems. Let's not aim at those, but let's be clear in our identity (or desired identity) and behave accordingly (I think I got this from James Clear, Atomic Habits).

Rather than "I will work out 3xs per week" start with "I am physically fit" or "I am an athlete". Then, let your actions confirm your identity. Every action/behavior we do votes for or against our desired identity. Are you acting like an athlete?

Rather than "I will read my Bible 5xs per week" start with "I love connecting with God."

(insert other examples here)

For further study: the same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwells in you  --  more than we could ask/imagine (Eph 3:20)

God's Strategic Plan

This isn't anything new. I scribbled it in my journal over Christmas break. Thought I'd put it here just because I can (and who knows, maybe I'll made a book of Christian Devotions sometime before I die, LOL).

God's Strategic Plan

(Part 1)

My heart is for the widow, the orphan and anyone who might be lonely, sad, depressed, oppressed, down, heartbroken, etc. That they may receive my rest & love. Period. I have come that they might have life and life abundantly (John 10:10). I want you to enter into my rest (Matt 11:28). A bent reed I will not break (Isa 42:3). I want to come into your life, relax and share a meal as friends (Rev 3:20). He who is forgiven much, loves much (Luke 7:47). So love the Lord with all that you have (Matt 22:37).

(Part 2)

Now, may my love, rest, peace and salvation give you hope to endure any and every hardship of this world with the confident hope (1 Peter 1:4) of the next world and my love and my eternal provision.

(Part 3)

Not just so that you can survive (independently) but to become a beacon of hope shining bright spreading my love and hope (Matt 5:16) so that all that see you, see Me and the work I have done in you. This gives me glory.

Amen

Doing it Different

I'm doing it different this time...

I love good sermons, books, thinking, pondering but do I soak enough to promote desired change? Not usually so I'm going to do something different this time... Rather than moving through the book to get done, I'm going to stop and master the practice.

The book: "Practicing the Way" by John Mark Comer

The practice: "Turning God into a Habit" (one of the chapters)

I'm going public for two reasons: 1) I'll be more likely to follow through if I've told someone & 2) I hope you are encouraged to slow down, soak and promote the change that you want (may or may not be the same as my current change). Feelings follow focus.

So I just re-listened to the chapter above and here's my goal or desired outcome

  • that my norm (habit, regularly, always) is to be in a place where I have...
    • God's Perspective (eternal)
    • God's Heart (mission/love for all)
    • God's Action & Words (trusting God in radical submission)
  • Constant ongoing prayer / communion / fellowship (friendship) with God.

Action (my specifics in red)

  • Re-wire my mind (mental habits)
  • Repetition / Discipline - my specific tools: 1) short paper journal entries throughout the day 2) worship music 3) up early to pray & read the Bible.
  • Practice the presence of God. (Abide) Thank you Brother Lawrence.
  • Pause the book for 30-60 days to prioritize (focus) on this habit: God being my go to constant companion / co-pilot. I think this will fit nicely with the holidays, advent and chaos of my home and this world. Share (with you) how it's going Dec. 6 (~30 days) and Jan. 6 (~60 days).
  • Compile a list of Bible characters (such as Daniel, David, Moses, Abraham, Jesus, etc.) and specific habits/disciplines they used to stay focused on God. Probably do this with my wife and our 7 year old. Maybe he can illustrate?

Stay tuned, 1st update is due Dec. 6 😎

=== === === Here's the 1st update === === ===
(12/3/24)
So I'm about 30 days into this and at a high level, I am keeping "God's perspective" (and peace) more of the time (more of a habit). And I'm experiencing more fruit (Gal 5:22) and so are those around me 😊. I CERTAINLY HAVE NOT ARRIVED but I am not living in the past, but pressing on (Phil 3:12-14) and this will always be the case.
Here are two more gems from the last 30 days: 1) "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Ps 90:12). Being mindful of the brevity of life and gratitude for the health we have helps me not sweat the small stuff (my perspective) and keep God's perspective. 2) "I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends." (Rev 3:20). Three things stick out to me: 1. He is pursuing us (knocking) and wants us to hear his voice. 2. We must open the door. Thoughtfully, deliberately making a choice to prioritize Jesus and then... 3) We will share a meal as "friends". What a beautiful picture! I pray that you give yourself this gift of friendship with Jesus. 🙏❤️

=== === === Here's the 2nd update === === ===
(1/5/25)
Today marks 68 days. I would say that overall, this has been a success. I have established a "God First" habit BUT let me tell you... This is only the beginning! Just today, as I was blessed with some solitude time with God, my eyes were opened to the fact that He will never run out of joy, delight, fellowship, provision, guidance, etc. for us. I'll go back to Rev 3:20 from above: I can have lunch with Jesus every day for the rest of my life on earth and eternity in Heaven and it will never get old or stale. The closest we come to on Earth is that couple that's been married 50+ years and you can just tell that they are always in love with each other. That is the closest example we have on Earth of the longevity and blessing of relationship with Him.
Which leads me to my next habit to foster: "Victoria Second". I won't be blogging about this one, but will say that we have some new connecting habits that we are going to establish in 2025. Pray for us!

Personal Wellness Plan - It's a process

Hello friends.

In this post, let's talk about wellness...

You may be familiar with the "wellness wheel"...

I'm going to dive in and suggest a process to continually monitor and improve your wellness. If you don't have time, I'd ask you to look 5 years out... In 5 years on your current trajectory where will you be? If you incorporate the process below, how might things look differently in 5 years? You make the choice (please invest in yourself, you are worth it).

Here's the process...

Choose a time and space, free from distractions where you can be unrushed.
Step 1: Assess your own wellness (self-evaluation) in each of the categories.
During this step some big gaps/needs may arise, jot them down in the margin or on another page for later.

Step 2: Reflect on it a bit and see what you think or if there are themes or identify biggest gaps/needs.
And don't forget to celebrate the wins. You have many wins!
This is a fuzzy step, but probably the most important step.

Step 3: Create your action plan.
Make sure you have NO MORE THAN 2 primary actions/changes to implement. Write them down (re-write them as needed). You can have a handful of lower priority items, but consider them a much lower priority than your BIG TWO

Step 4: Repeat this exercise at least 1 a quarter.

Please reach out with questions, success stories, failures, etc.

========

If you want a little more guidance as to what may fall within each category, read on...

Occupational Wellness: This is what you do. What occupies your time. Often a paid job or a business your run, but not always. How do you feel about what you are doing? Are you finding fulfillment in the work you do and maintaining a positive work-life balance?

Environmental Wellness: This isn't just recycling, going green and driving a Tesla. Is your personal environment good for your peace and growth? Think of a green house as a great environment for a plant. What is a good environment for you? Clutter? Does your home, car, life promote your peace and growth?

Intellectual Wellness: Your mind is a wonderful thing. Are you mindful? What are you learning about? Are you investing in yourself here? Are you trying new things and being curious? Often we put this on the back burner. Note this is not just reading books or listening to podcasts, but thinking, pondering, trying new things (application of what we are learning).

Spiritual Wellness: How is your spirit/soul? How have you best connected with your maker in the past? Are you doing that now? What are your spiritual disciplines? What do you believe and how is that impacting your life?

Emotional Wellness: Are you checking in with yourself? Is your internal talk negative (critic) or kind, gentle and curious. When you have a feeling, do you feel it long enough to honor it and see what it is indicating? If so you can effectively investigate the facts and make a thoughtful next move.

Physical Wellness: Are you a good care taker of your physical body? How is your sleep? Exercise/activity? What are you eating/drinking? When & why? What are your good habits (or bad habits)?

Financial Wellness: Does money bring you life and freedom or stress? What habits/practices do you have (or do you need) so that you are financially well?

Social Wellness: Do you have a solid community including 1-2 people that you can really open up to? People that know you, see you, get you and celebrate/encourage you? And how are you serving others and giving from your abundance?

Basic Reminders

Slow down right now and imagine this…

an explosion 💥 in your heart ♥️ of epic proportions filling your heart with Christ’s light and love. Shaking lose and purging any sin, foothold or stronghold Satan may have had. You are left with nothing but his light and love filling your heart to overflowing. Meditate on this reality right now for Christ has done it for you ✅ just be still 😌. (Part 2 is coming tomorrow)

Part 2 - Guard Your Heart ♥️ “Above all else, guard your heart for from it flows the springs of life.” Prov 4:23 It is done! ✅ And Christ will fill our heart with His love and light daily upon our request so be filled and guard it to maintain the outflowing of His love, light & grace to others. Biologically the heart keeps the mind alive and our bodies full of energy to run the race. Spiritually our hearts keep the body of Christ alive. Our hearts are the source from which we can consistently love and encourage others. Christ said, “I have come that you might have LIFE abundantly.” Let us guard our hearts so that we stay ALIVE and give LIFE to the body of Christ. To God be the thanks, praise & glory. Amen.

Part 3 - Your Mind 🧠 Kept alive by your heart, the mind is central command. It is subject to everything we see 👀 and hear 👂🏼. It is where we take in and process this information, react with emotions and form beliefs. Let God transform your mind so that it is built on the rock of Jesus/Truth and can withstand any attack. Satan attacks directly and covertly. The mind is the gateway to your heart and you must be on guard so that Satan never gets a foothold in your heart. Be MINDFUL (thoughtful and intentional) and alert to the Devil’s schemes putting on your spiritual armor so that you do not fall.

Part 4 - Your Body Our temporary earthly vessel by His design for His purpose and glory. Think of your body as your uniform in the Lord’s service. Issued by Him and for Him. Unlike a shirt, we cannot take off this vessel so do not get entangled with earthly things (2 Tim 2:1) and chase pleasures of this life (Jam 4:4). Take care of your body and use it as an instrument of His peace (John 14:27). You are His and the power in you is stronger than any powers in this world (1 John 4:4). Yee haw!

Part 5 - Others

Our hearts are full and guarded. Christ’s stronghold is secure and deeply rooted in our heart & mind. Our bodies are disciplined and obedient to God (our commanding officer). Now, operating from here we can freely love one another, period, no exceptions. Fruits of the Spirit running rampant showing the love of Christ in every encounter God set up in advance for us to love one another, love one another & love one another. ❤️

Let's talk about fruit...

Imagine a well pruned orange tree full of fruit.

Now imagine a poorly cared for tree that is scraggly, out of control and yielding sparse and inconsistent fruit.

Who doesn't want to be fruitful?

This morning I was reading John 15 and am reminded that GOD WANTS US TO BE FRUITFUL probably for two reasons: 1) it glorifies Him, builds His Kingdom, draws others to Him and 2) we will be happier and more fulfilled if we are fruitful.

(vs 1-2) I am the vine, my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch that doesn't produce fruit and He prunes the branches that do bear fruit so that they will produce even more.

(vs 4-8) Jesus encourages us to REMAIN JOINED TO HIM AND HIS WORDS so that we will be more fruitful.

(vs 9-17) Jesus reminds us of his great love for us and that He wants us to remain in that love which will bring us joy. He goes on to remind us to love each other and that we can be his friend if we obey and remain in his love.

PART 2 - Let's look for fruit...

Gal 5:22 "...when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will product this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control."

These fruits are the result of remaining joined to Him, in His love, knowing His word and obeying His call on our lives to remain in Him and love one another. Let us do that more and more today.

Phases of Life - let's think about it

So I'm 48 now and reflecting on life phases...

Hopefully this encourages you to think, reflect & ponder who you are, where you are now and where you are going. 🙂

(I'm skipping birth-18 and limiting my scope to after high school graduation)

INVEST: This is typically a selfish phase of investment in self (such as college). In this phase you are tested to see how you do on your own (you don't have to listen to your parents if you don't want to). You will have many choices and freedoms and you will reap what you sow (Gal 6:4-5,7). I hope you choose/chose wisely, but if you didn't, at least you learned! (Heb 12:11)

ESTABLISH: During this phase (early/mid 20s?) we usually select housing, a job and what we do with our time (hobbies/passions/interests). Also during this phase we inform our decisions based on our lens and how we see the world and our place in the world. For me, I established that I'm a beloved child of God, that is passing through this world with the purpose of loving others and sharing Christ.

BUILD: On the foundation we established and the beliefs we have, we build, build, build. Hopefully in fruitful joyful labor, but the slippery slope in America is to accumulate (more, more, more). Society tells us that we can have it all, do it all, be it all and we can fall into the trap of building our own personal kingdom (life). We make many choices to establish security (retirement) and joy (entertainment/pleasure). I want to battle the busy rat race and remain in the peace and purpose established above.

CONTENT: (40s?) For me, I think I'm in this phase. I recently left my highly compensated and secure job to do work that is much harder for a fraction of the compensation (Marriage & Family Therapy). I did not sell all that I have to follow Jesus (Matt 19:21) and still live comfortably in a nice home and I have nice things. The milestone/change of this phase is to stop building your personal kingdom and focus more (more, more & more) on things of eternal value. No one on their deathbed wishes that they spent more time at work, so keep this in check.

CONTENT PHASE 2: (50s & 60s?) During this phase, we start to feel our age more, which reminds us to focus on the truly important and let go of things that don't matter.

CONTENT PHASE 3: (70+) If you haven't already, in this phase you'll experience more loss as people (friends/family/community) pass. Yet another reminder of what really matters.

So my takeaway as I reflect on these phases is how important our day to day decisions are! I'd argue that during invest, establish & build we can and should be content and focused on the truly important.

10 lbs in a 5 lb bag

Hello readers. I haven't blogged for awhile but I wanted to share this latest thought and what I would call wisdom (at least for me).

I've been working on my tone which essentially means being more patient and I've been pretty successful at home, but not as successful at work and here's my epiphany: when I'm stressed, I'm much less likely to be compassionate, full of patience and grace

At work, I'm busy, over busy and I feel like I'm always trying to put 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag (which isn't possible by the way). When I'm operating like this, I'm scrambling and fighting a battle I can't win (pause for reflection) and in addition, I'm not patient and graceful. So that would make it a lose-lose situation. I lose and the person I'm impatient with as well also looses.

So here's my action plan: Keep expectations realistic (5 lbs in a 5 lb bag) and then I will be able to be who I want to be (full of patience & grace).

What will this take? Prioritization and focus (see 4/3/11 blog post on "never enough time" & "big rocks"). Anytime we say "yes" to one thing, we are saying "no" to several other things. With that being said, I'm going to finish saying "yes" to this blog post and move on to the next part of my day.

Peace.

9/10/22 Update: In May of this year I left my busy corporate job and now I am a therapist (Marriage & Family). This has been quite the life change. I still need to think about it, but it's not as hard 🙂

Do you want to encounter Jesus?

I was inspired by the sermon this morning (Mark 5:21-43, https://extendgrace.org/) and wanted to share...

The question was asked: Who would be most likely to encounter Jesus? To know and walk closely with Jesus?
I quickly scribbled an answer and then came up with two more...

1) If I had very regular quiet times full of prayer and Word, I think I would encounter Jesus. If I loved others unconditionally ALWAYS, I would probably encounter Jesus more.

2) Feelings: If I had the desire to know and be with Jesus, I would be full of joy, peace, power & purpose. And encounters with Jesus.

3) The only pre-req is that we have a NEED. Jesus meets us when we are in "need" of Him.

YES. Jesus is available no matter what! We don't need to have good Christian disciplines. We don't need to have the warm fuzzy feelings. We just need to need Him and ask for an encounter (see Mark 5:21-43).

++++ additional thoughts ++++
Upon additional pondering... The nature of the word "encounter" implies not very often. My desire (#2 above) it to continually "encounter" Jesus 24/7 in every micro moment, thought and action.

++++ a poem I thought fitting ++++
Image result for footprints poem

++++ Bonus Material to Ponder ++++
Q: Do you have the power/ability to limit what God can do in your life?

A: I'm afraid the answer is "yes" because if we surrender and turn to Him, good things happen (God's power flows through us). If we turn away from God and go our own way, we delay God's power and plan coursing through our lives.

Let me know what you think. :)

Recent Inspiration - Prayer-Faith-Trust

So after some great fellowship last night and listening to a sermon this morning (Why Doesn't God Answer My Prayers? at Grace Roseville) I'm inspired to ponder and think :)

Two main actionable takeaways for me:
1) More time in prayer (for work, home, school, others, etc.)
2) More faith and trust in God (living as if He's got my back in all things)

I think it's progressive and building. I like formulas so here's my formula:
Foundation: Repent from sin. We are all sinners and need to continually acknowledge and repent from our sin. A good checking question: What sin do I have in my life (thought, word & deed) today that I have not repented from? (repent is to do a 180 and walk away from it completely, no turning back)
Level 1: Obedience. We are not to judge or decide a la cart what to do, we are to listen and obey. God is very clear in this matter (ref Bible). A friend of mine shared a quote that "we are responsible to obey the outcome/result is God's responsibility." WOW! This is really freeing and totally makes sense. We are not God so all we're just responsible to follow orders. He is responsible for results. WOW.
Level 2: Faith/Trust. Building on the foundation (sinner saved by grace and beloved of the Father) and level 1 (obedience) we enter into faith/trusting in God's promises. This includes that His timing will most likely not align with ours, but that's why we are trusting him.
Level 3: Life to the fullest (John 10:10). I'd argue that with a firm foundation and solid levels 1 & 2 we can freely enjoy the life God has for us, life to the fullest. Let's enter into the joy of our master (Matt 25:23). Onward, upward & heavenward :)

Sooooo, what level are you operating at? Are any of your levels not completely solid/secure? If not, work it! (that's what I plan to do)

Standing Out vs. Fitting In

Some things to think about (a few random paragraphs, loosely connected)...
These thoughts were inspired by meeting with BUILT guys from Camp Cherith 1-19-19.

It is in our human nature to fit in. We generally want to look like, be like, act like, dress like our peers, those around us. We generally are full of pride and concerned with our image. From this place we are OK standing out if we won or out did our peers such as being faster, better, smarter, having more, doing more, etc. Winning (standing out, competing) unfortunately carries the risk of making others feel like they are "less" since in this case you are "more". Hmmmmm, doesn't seem like winning is good to me.

Everybody gets a trophy. Is this good or bad? Let's look at it in two areas: First, consider a race in track and field... The 5th graders are told to run the race as fast as they can to win first place. Give it your best try! If after the race, they all get the same recognition, what does that say? The problem arises when we mistake "First Place" as meaning your are better than the others (see competition in the paragraph above). In reality, "First Place" just means that you were the fastest runner that day. Congratulations!! Now let's consider "everybody gets a trophy" from God's perspective: Amazing Grace. In this case, we (if we believe in Jesus) all get the prize (eternal life). God puts us all on the same level and freely gives eternal life to the thief on the cross and the Christian who followed Jesus and loved others every step of the way. I think this is good and humbling because it reminds us that we are all sinners and we all need Jesus. This sets us up to humbly serve one another because we are all in the same boat (sinners saved by amazing grace).

So back to "fitting in" with regards to our faith: In our human nature, we want to fit in; this also applies to our faith. We don't want to be different or stand out because we are a Christian. I think there are two ways of looking at this: The first (self-centered) isn't fruitful or good, but the second (Christ-following) is very fruitful. The self-centered view says that, I don't want to say I'm a Christian, carry a Bible and let them know I go to church every Sunday. They might judge me as different and weird and I want to fit in. The Christ-following view says that I will be loving and kind to everyone, just like Jesus. If I stand out, let me be weird because I love others (not because I'm a Christian or because I go to church). "They will know that we are Christians by our love." (John 13:35) In the Christ-following view we stand out for leading by example and laying down our lives for others (John 15:13) and everybody wins the more we all do this (God's amazing grace). I think this is a good idea. :)

So I hope that you can ponder and think a bit on these topics. My prayer is that if we stand out, if we are weird, different and don't fit in, it is because we have received God's grace/forgiveness/love and that we freely give it to others. May we be known for this and may it turn others to the Giver of Grace and all good things. To God be the glory. Amen.

Mindfulness 101

Yesterday was a great Saturday, filled with good things.  But I was busy (as I usually am) and around 8pm, I sat in a chair and was still for just a few minutes.  It was so good, that I want to do two things: 1) write this post for you (and for me) and 2) start to incorporate it into my daily routine.

So what are we talking about anyway?  Mindfulness, meditation, prayer, pick your word, but I'm going to define it as being awake, at peace and still with complete freedom.  Think of it as "checking out" or even "escaping" for a few moments.  Some envision stepping out of yourself and observing your self from the outside.  Whatever works for you.

Why?  Because it's good for you (and all those around you).  The mind needs good rest at night to sort through the previous day and set you up for success for the new day (there are countless articles and data supporting this).  And the great part about sleep, is you don't have to think about it.  Your brain does it automatically while you are resting in deep sleep.  BUT that's not what we are talking about here.  I'm not going ot ramble on and justify that it's good for you but what I will ask is that you try it for 10 days and then decide for yourself.

Here are a few guidelines that I am going to try to follow (take them with a grain of salt and feel free to modify per your preference)

  • Set a timer:  I prefer to set a timer, that way I'm free to let thoughts go.  Start small with 5 minutes and then take it from there.
  • Eyes:  I close my eyes so I have fewer distractions, but feel free to pick something to look at, but stay focused.
  • Head: Straight posture, not leaning on a headrest tempting sleep ;)
  • Feet:  Flat on the floor.  Don't cross your legs.
  • Hands:  I prefer open hands, palms up, ready to receive whatever peace comes your way.
  • Breathing:  Deep and slow, usually I start by paying close attention to my breaths (intently observing).
  • Mind:  This is the most important (obviously) and my suggestion is to just keep it free and observe.  If you think of your todo list, don't fret, there's nothing wrong with a todo list.  Just let your thoughts come and go observing each one.  Same with feeling or sights or sounds.  If you have an itch, don't scratch it, just observe it, feel it and then move on.
  • Where:  Up to you, but a peaceful quiet place where you won't be interrupted is recommended.
  • A word:  Some people pick a word or phrase to center/re-center on during their time.  Totally up to you.
I'd love to hear what you think after trying something for 5-10 days.

Choose Your Own Adventure (Grace)

I dont know if you remember those "choose your own adventure" books where you got to make decisions and the story would unfold based on those decisions...  Life is kinda like that too and this blog has that simple style too (but only 1 question as I like to keep it short).

Q1:  If all your accomplishments big and small were stripped away and shown to have no worth, would you be OK standing before God with nothing but your sinful, selfish, self to offer?  Would you be OK?  Why or why not?

Option A:  If your answer is "Yes, I'm OK because that's how grace works." then from that place (all of your accomplishments being worth nothing), how do you operate today, this week, month, year?  What do you aim at?  What is really important?

Option B:  If your answer is, "No, I'd be scared, ashamed and fearful standing there, a sinner." then I'd encourage you to sit down in that place before God and watch how He treats anyone who comes to Him. As you sit and watch God interact with the sinners who come, I think you will be surprised and likely overwhelmed.  You may be tempted to cry out "it's not fair" as you see worse sinners than you freely accepted and loved by God.

(INSERT TIME HERE TO PONDER AND THINK)

Here are a few verses for you...

  • A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. (Isa 42:3)
  • All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. (John 6:37)
  • "Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends." (Rev 3:20)

Let's Start with Identity

Happy New Year!!
Thanks for reading.

Just going to recap some of my THMs (Take Home Messages) from the sermon this morning at Grace Roseville (http://www.extendgrace.org/) by Mark Allen...
Twas a great sermon and start to a new year.  He reminded us to remember our identity, "I am a child of God."  Easier said than done, I know.  To help me remember, I need to get up early and write it and re-write it in my journal.  How do you remember who you are?
The other aha for me is the following...

I've been focused on my goals for 2017 which isn't a bad thing, but there's a logical order to it and without a solid base to your pyramid, your top two layers may be misdirected (this risk is completely avoidable).
If your identity (firm foundation) is solid on the rock (Matt 7:24-27) you can discover your specific purpose through that lens (child of God).  This is not our home, so seek out your purpose from that place (Col 3:1).
Assuming you've spent the time to establish your firm foundation and discover your unique purpose / passion / interests, now (and only now) can you identify a few goals to live out your purpose.  Let's do it!!

But wait, what about all those other goals you had, such as lose 10 pounds, exercise more, this or that?  Don't toss those goals out but re-frame them (and re-direct them as needed) based on the first two layers of your pyramid.  There's nothing wrong with health goals or financial goals that are grounded in the truth of our firm foundation, so ask yourself the checking question:  "Is this goal supported by who I am and my purpose on the planet?"
This is what I call peeling back the onion.  There are many layers/complexity behind us and our goals.  Let's peel back the layers of the onion to get to the real "why" behind our goals.  As an example, let's say you want to pay off your home mortgage early.  Why?  I don't want to waste money on interest and I want to lower my monthly expenses.  Why?  If I lower my expenses, I can save more.  Why?  If I can save more and lower my expenses, I can retire earlier.  Why?  If I retire earlier, I won't have to work and will have more time.  Why do you want more time?  That's a good question!!  I would argue that the answer to that question is the most important thing in the world (it's part of our goals, from our purpose, from our foundation) and we should start doing that NOW (not when we pay off the mortgage & retire).
I think I'll leave you to ponder that and please do so, the happiness and utility of your life depend on it!

Find Your Purpose

8/31/16 - The 3 steps below are for those that don't like to read.  After the 3 steps, there's more words, resources, etc.

How to "find your purpose" in 3 Steps
(note, these are not 3 easy steps):

1) "Know thyself" & "To thine own self be true"  (Socrates & Shakespeare respectively)

This is largely an individual exercise, but can be augmented by close trusted friends such as a spouse.  Depending on how busy your life is, this step might have two phases:  A) get out of the noise/distractions of your current life and rest and be for a while, then phase B) listen, ask and answer the questions.
The questions you might ask (be honest with yourself and write em down, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming):
  • What do I like to do?
  • When am I most happy?
  • What am I most passionate about?
  • Why am I here?  What does the world need, my community need, my neighbor need?
  • When I'm dead, what do I want people to remember?
So once you've answered these questions (with time, patience & honesty), move on to step 2...

2) Know God   You can (and should) bounce back and forth between steps 1 & 2 (or combine them if you'd like).
Away from the noise/distractions of your current life, get to know God, seek Him, listen and read the Bible.
We are each fearfully and wonderfully made.  God has made us unique in our personalities, skills, passions & interests so who better to consult with than your creator?  What did You make me for anyway?!?!
Listen, ask and answer questions.  Take your brainstormed list from step 1 and refine it, prioritize it, look at it with your maker, add to it, subtract from it (but keep your notes, for step 3).
One of my favorite teachings is on this (all 3 steps) is from Church of the Highlands:  "I am a minister"
He made you expressly for purposes that He lined up in advance (Eph 2:10).  He didn't make you and then size you up and think to Himself, "hmmmm, what do you suppose we could do with this one?" but rather the other way around.  :)
A few verses to ponder:  Eph 2:10, Ex 9:16, Job 42:2, Prov 19:21, Prov 20:5, Rom 8:28 & II Tim 1:9.

3) Confirm & Pilot
First, don't shortcut the time and investment in step 1 and 2,  Depending on how much busy-ness and noise is in your life and how effectively you can withdraw from it to a quiet peaceful place, the first two steps may take awhile.  Assuming you can easily get to a quiet place, I'd plan for AT LEAST 2-3  sessions for each step.  These individual sessions might be 1-2 hours long, maybe shorter.  Have a pen, paper & Bible near by.  Take good notes, draw pictures, dream, etc.  These may by helpful in Step 3.
So in Step 1 & 2 you've talked, brainstormed and confirmed with yourself, God (The Word) and possibly a trusted friend.  Now is when we go to that trusted friend or two.  I'd encourage you to set up an hour/lunch with this person and give them a heads up to what you are looking for.  In fact, you might even give them some questions about you that they could answer before meeting.  Then do it.  Sit down with them and review, brainstorm, discuss, ask for their input, sounding board, etc.  What you are looking for here is confirmation such as...  "I think I'm really passionate about and good at _______.  Do you see that in me?  What else do you see in me?"
If you have your pilot plans (how you are going to intentionally invest and try it out), you may want to review them and use your trusted friend as a sounding board.  (depending on your pilot you may also want to consult with an expert who is already doing it (see ch 7-8 of Broken Escalators))
Start doing it!  After step 1, 2 and half of 3, begin your pilot (see below for info).  Learn from it and live life to the fullest (which includes regular repeat visits to step 1, 2 & 3)  :)

----  End of the brief summary, read on for more info, thoughts & resources ----

Notes on how pilots work:   First of all, this may be a new term to some of you, so let's define it...   A pilot program, also called a feasibility study or experimental trial, is a small-scale, short-term experiment that helps an organization learn how a large-scale project might work in practice.  In  nutshell it's trying it out.  So let's say you went through steps 1-3 above and you are convinced that gardening is your passion, it's what makes you happy.  Before you buy a field and a tractor, you might consider tearing up a corner of your yard and trying it.  Then, after a season, you can reflect and plan for the next year.  Keep in mind, that a successful pilot provides information which might lead you to decide to make a bigger garden next year OR you might decide, that's not for you and a change in direction and your real passion is photography.  A note on this:  Don't be the person that's trying something new every year (jack of all trades, master of none) but keep in mind that to build/invest in something meaningful you will face challenges that will require fortitude and persistence to overcome.  Go back to steps 1-3 to evaluate if you are giving up too early or if you should press on.
If you want more info on pilots or a real life example (mine, which is in-process), please contact me.

Additional Resources:
  • 5 Whys:  This is a basic tool to get down to the root cause.  Typically, it's used for problem solving (need to know the root cause to fix the problem and not just a symptom) but it can also be used to get to the "why" behind your passion/interest.  The way it works is simple, you ask "why" five times (or until you get to the root cause.  So here's a quick example:
    • Gardening is my passion
    • Why?
    • Because I like to watch the plants grow
    • Why?
    • Because when they grow, I feel that I'm accomplishing something
    • Why?
    • Because, there are so many challenges in life, economy, politics, etc. that the garden is one place where it's just me and God free from the distractions of the world
    • Why?
    • Because from this place I'm reminded that I'm not in charge, God is and all I need to do is set things up and He will bring them to pass and this helps me in the rest of life.

God is Love

I can never fit my ponderings into a tweet so here's the continuation...
9/1/16 - Just a few reminders for the today...

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8)
We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19) even though we were sinners (Rom 5:8)
Love one another (John 13:34) and they will know that we are Christ followers by our love for one another (John 13:35)

Mindset Motivation Methodology

I heard this from a podcast this week.  I think it was the Entreleadership Podcast (sorry can't remember).

So here's a little nugget to start your week:

All your employees need to have proper mindset, motivation & methodology in order to be successful for your business.  Let's not forget, the primary employee that will make or break your business in life is YOU!  So, you need to make sure these are all working in your benefit to maximize your potential and the potential of those around you...

Mindset:  This is the first and most important.  Essentially this is how you think, what you believe, etc.  Just who do you think you are anyway?  If you think you are a winner, you will win (or at least keep trying).  If you think you don't have what it takes, then YOU DON'T.  What do you believe about your work, your company, you job, your marriage, etc.  If your cup is half empty, then it's just that.  Mine is half full and I'm going to fill the rest.

Motivation:  This is the "why" behind what you are doing.  Why are you doing it?  What is your crusade?  What are you aiming for?  If it's to make money so that I can retire or go do something else, check again and dig deeper to find what your real motivation/passion is.  When you peel back the onion, you'll find that any motivation that will lead to success will be true, honorable & noble, so give it your all, your best & be the best dang _____ you can possibly be!  (Col 3:17)

Methodology:  This is how you go about it.  With the right tools you will be successful.  Old antiquated tools, methods, etc. may get the job done, but not as well nor as fast (this burning time, one of our most valuable assets).  We've all used the handle of a screwdriver as a hammer aaaaannnnnnd, it kinda works, but not really.  Similarly don't balance your checkbook with pen, paper and an abacus.  Don't market your business without social media.  Don't learn a new skill outside your wheelhouse if you can outsource it easier and effectively so you can focus on what you do best.  Sure, I can change my own oil, but really, is that the best use of my time???

#1 - Apply this to yourself.
#2 - Apply this to your team.  How?  On Mindset & Motivation see where they are at (this takes time and patience to understand).  Then, maybe share where you are at or your journey in these two areas (yes, this also takes time and vulnerability as well as a listening ear).  Once you know where they are at, you can decide to groom them (keep them around) or broom them (show them the door).  Finally, if they have the first two M's be sure to support your team and give them the latest technology, tools and methods to SUCCEED WILDLY

Nothing Is Impossible

(this blog written at Maidenwood Lodge, WI - I recommend a visit)

Nothing is impossible...

(You'll get the most out of this short blog if you read slowly, ponder & think.)

"Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible.  But with God everything is possible." - Matt 19:26

"Take delight in the Lord and He will give you your heart's desires." - Ps 37:4

Please read these 12 verses (I Sam 14:6-17):  Link to these verses  I'm encouraged by Jonathan's faith and attitude:  "Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord.  He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few."

What is it that you want/desire?

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want." (Ps. 23:1)

Yet, we are directed to KEEP ON ASKING by Jesus Christ Himself...  "Keep on asking and you will be given what you ask for.  Keep on looking and you will find.  Keep on knocking and the door will be opened.  For everyone who asks, receives.  Everyone who seeks, finds.  And the door is opened to everyone who knocks."

I encourage you to submit all your wants and desired to God and to KEEP ON ASKING.

Q1:  What is one thing you want to keep asking for?
Q2:  Do you believe God can/will answer?  Why or why not?

Good Friday

Hello friends and faithful readers.

I went to church tonight.  Good Friday.  I think I've decided that between Christmas, Easter and Good Friday that Good Friday is my favorite.  Why you ask?  Because for me, Good Friday church is an intimate invitation to enter into His world and imagine what it might have been like to walk His steps.  Good Friday church services are generally quieter and reflective.  What would it be like to have been there?  Confusion and wonder I'll bet.  What is it like from our vantage point, knowing His plan for our salvation?  I still don't get it completely and I may never while still on this earth.  That's one thing that makes Grace what it is but one thing I do know...  I will respond by slowing down and resting in Him.  He is God after all (not me).  That is my prayer for you as you read this, that you will hear and feel God calling you to rest in him.

I'll leave you with a video link or just the lyrics below.  Take your pick.

"The Wonderful Cross"

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

See from his head, his hands, his feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did ever such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live
O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace draw near and bless
Your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

Who Are We?

Good day!

It's hard to believe that half of the first month of 2016 is already over!  Only 11.5 months to go and we'll be another year older and reflecting on 2016 as history as we look to 2017.  I was encouraged by an e-mail from a friend Nic and I wanted to post it here.

It is from "Who We Are" that we live and move and have our being (see Acts 17:28) so this is a reminder (courtesy of my friend Nic).  I encourage you to slow down and soak in these verses, don't let them roll like water off a ducks back, but let them penetrate and be your anchor as you succeed in 2016!!!

So who are we?

God tells us:

We are TRULY RIGHTEOUS and PERFECTED
Gal 4:6-7 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son. And since you are a son, you are also an heir.
1 Thes 5:5 For you are all sons of light, sons of the day.
2 Cor. 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come the old has gone, the new is here!
Heb 10:14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

We have FRIENDSHIP with God and are not merely servants
John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing: but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

WE have POWER AND AUTHORITY here, now, in this life
Matthew 28:18 All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, go therefore!
Luke 10:19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.
Matthew 16:19 …Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
1 John 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world.
Rom 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us
Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
2 Cor 2:14 Thanks be to God who always causes us to triumph
Isa 54:17 No weapon formed against you will stand
Prov 28:1 The Righteous are as bold as a lion.
Ps 112:6 The Righteous will never be shaken.
Rom 5:17 Those who receive the free gift of righteousness will reign in life.

We are FREE from the law and free from sin
Rom 8:2 For the law of the spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Rom 6:18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness
Rom 6:22 But now that you have been set free from sin..

We are elevated to the status of heir
Rom 8:17 If children, then heirs – heirs of God and join heirs with Christ

We are laborers, together WITH God
1 Cor 3:9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

We have been established, anointed, and have been sealed by God
2 Cor 1:21-22 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

We are chosen by God, we are Holy, We are a royal priesthood, we are God’s special possession, we are dearly loved
Col 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
1 Pet 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praise of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
